Walking challenge to the summit
The Fichtelbergmarsch is a demanding walking event that leads participants toward the highest peak in Saxony. Starting in Chemnitz, walkers navigate a route through the Ore Mountains, ending at the summit of the Fichtelberg. The event is characterized by its significant elevation gain and is explicitly described as a personal challenge rather than a competition.
Route and distance
The event focuses on a single long-distance route:
- 63 km with 1,700 meters of elevation gain
The path is marked throughout and takes participants through varied terrain. Due to potential temperature fluctuations of up to 20° C between the start and the summit, walkers are required to carry appropriate clothing.
Facilities and logistics
There are five refreshment stations along the route providing a variety of food, including a vitamin buffet, a rustic buffet, and both hot and cold drinks. Walkers must bring their own bottles and cups for beverages and soup to help reduce waste. For those unable to complete the full distance, a free shuttle service to the finish is available from the second, third, and fourth refreshment points. Additionally, an optional bus transport back to the starting point in Chemnitz can be booked. Finisher certificates and pins are provided to those who complete the trek.
