Bello Gallico : walking details
The Bello Gallico offers two walk distances on marked trail loops through the Brabantse Wouden National Park. Both walk courses start and finish at the Roosenberg in Oud-Heverlee. Walkers follow reflective yellow arrows; road crossings are signed but may be unmanned, so caution is needed.
- 160 km (two 80 km loops)
- 80 km (one 80 km loop)
The walk editions are time‑generous and use a maximum walking speed of 6.5 km/h. Checkpoints are placed roughly every 20 km and provide water, drinks, sweet and savory snacks, and sometimes hot food. A hot meal is provided mid-race for the 160 km walk. Showers are available at a nearby facility about 600 metres from headquarters.
Walkers receive a race number, an attached GPS tracker for live monitoring and SOS use, and a finisher’s medal. Drop bags are allowed: the 160 km walk can use two drop bags (Pécrot and Leefdaal); the 80 km walk can use one (Pécrot). Drop bags must be under 10 kg and are handed in at registration.
Mandatory kit checks are enforced. Items include GPS tracker, charged phone, survival bag, headlamp with spare batteries, waterproof jacket and trousers, at least 1.0 litre liquid, first aid and personal medication, red rear light, cup, and suitable shoes. CP4/6 in Leefdaal permits short-term sleeping for the long walk with personal gear only. Medical teams and checkpoints provide support, but walkers should be self-reliant and familiarise themselves with the route. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
