Trail des Forts de Besançon : walking overview
The event takes place in and around Besançon and uses paths within the city’s historic fortifications and surrounding hills. Routes mix urban sections, riverside paths and technical trails across wooded slopes and heritage sites. Several options suit walkers and guided visits.
- 11 km rando for a city discovery walk.
- Balade Chaudanne two guided walks exploring the old town and nearby hills.
- Balade Bregille guided strolls for visitors and companions.
Longer formats cross forts and include steep, technical sections with significant elevation change. The 22 km route has about 600 m of ascent and finishes at the Citadelle UNESCO site. The night time 5.4 km contre-la-montre includes 150 m of ascent and runs along remparts with headlamps required. The full 62 km course links 10 forts and is described as technical and historic; the 62 km solo is limited to 1,000 participants. A two-day Challenge 3 Épreuves exists and is limited to 300 entrants. There are also short family and kids formats. Information emphasises nature, heritage and varied terrain rather than flat promenades. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
