Vierdaagse van de IJzer : practical walking overview
The Vierdaagse van de IJzer is a four-day commemorative walking march through West Flanders, held 17 to 20 August 2027. It is organised by the Belgian Defence in cooperation with Koksijde, Nieuwpoort, Diksmuide, Poperinge and Ieper. The event draws large numbers of walkers; the 53rd edition recorded 15,434 participants, with about 8,575 walkers on day three.
Each day has a clear start and finish zone in different towns. Day 1 starts at the St‑Niklaaskerk on Leopold II laan in Oostduinkerke with the finish at the Visserijmuseum Navigo in Oostduinkerke. Day 2 both starts and finishes at the Grote Markt of Diksmuide. Day 3 both starts and finishes at the Grote Markt of Poperinge. Day 4 has its start on the Grote Markt of Ieper and the arrival is also on the Grote Markt of Ieper.
The event emphasises remembrance and discovery of local history and landscapes in West Flanders. Practical facilities are mentioned on the site and by participants: rest posts and first aid were reported as well equipped. Information pages list topics such as route adjustments, supply points, parking, transport, accommodation, medical help and sanitation, so walkers can expect organised support along the route and municipal cooperation at the daily start/finish zones.
